Antoon VERSTEEGDE has mainly sought his artistic freedom outside established institutes and exhibition spaces, in public locations with free access for everyone. He has accomplished large artistic constructions as transient outdoor installations constructed with lightweight materials such as bamboo, flags, rope and rubber bands. Through this process he has gained experience with large-scale interactive projects and developed world-wide relations with other artists, builders and scientists. The techniques developed have proven to be highly successful for realizing huge sculptures in a short time, working with groups of artists and volunteers. His construction techniques are easily passed on to people who want to co-operate spontaneously, the use of rubber bands proved ideal for public installations because interested individuals can become involved without needing protective clothing or gloves.
